Astronomy Science ~ VY Canis Majoris is the biggest star in the universe (cosmos) which are known by man. VY Canis Majoris is located in the Canis Major constellation. It is located about 4,900 light years from Earth.
It was first known on 7 March 1801 based on star catalog of Jerome Lalande. The catalog recorded VY Canis Majoris as 7 major star. Since 1847, VY Canis Majoris is known as a red star. With a rate of about 3000 K, it is a cold temperatures for a star.
Unlike other big stars, VY Canis Majoris is a single star. VY Canis Majoris is very large when compared to the large diameter of our solar system roughly from the sun to beyond the orbit Saturn (9 times the distance of the Sun to the Earth) or 3.063 billion km.
