Astronomy Science ~ A group led by British scientists plan to plant lettuce on the red planet in the hope that this plant will help feed the colonies on Mars.

If the plan is approved, the lettuce can be sent to Mars in 2018, as part of the Mars One mission to build human settlements there in 2025.

On Mars, the temperature dropped to -90 ° C at night, a large dust storm covered the entire planet for weeks, and the wind speed can reach 60mph (30 meters per second). Sounds like a difficult environment for human beings to survive, let other living things such as plants.

But the project run at the University of Southampton is aimed at planting and maintaining a vegetable salad in a glass house, which will protect it from extreme conditions. Suzanna Lucarotti project leader said: "To survive on other planets, we need to grow food there. No one has ever done this and we intend to be first.

"This plan is technically feasible and very ambitious because we will bring the first complex life to another planet." The project is called #LettuceOnMars. The greenhouse will be launched from Earth with lettuce seeds, water, nutrients, atmospheric and system for processing electronic monitoring. On the way to Mars, the greenhouse system will be switched off and inactive, during that time, lettuce seed will be frozen.

After a safe landing, Mars One will begin supplying electricity to heating elements and to maintain the temperature between 21 ° C to 24 ° C. Carbon dioxide, which is very important for the life of the plant, will be taken from the Martian atmosphere and processed before entering the room growth.

Lettuce will then be grown without soil and regularly sprayed with water and nutrients. After reaching the greenhouse environment conditions are suitable, the plant will begin to grow. Then, the lettuce will be photographed and sent to Earth, so scientists and the public will be able to witness the mature lettuce plants from seed.

Once the mission is complete, the heater temperature will be raised to full strength, exterminate all life in the greenhouse.
