Astronomy Science ~ A joint research team from Japan and the United States have discovered the comet dust particles were taken from Antarctica (this is the first comet dust particles are found on the surface of the earth). In their paper published in the Earth and Planetary Science Letters journal, the researchers explain how they discovered particles of dust and what they learned while analyzing these particles.

Finding samples of comet material is not easy, to send a vehicle to pick up the comet dust in outer space and back to Earth is a rare occurrence. Therefore, the scientists collected samples which flew high in the Earth's atmosphere that has a weakness for using sticky sheets that capture some of the dust particles and leave the oil in the samples contaminated by solvents and is intended to clean up this dust.

In this latest effort, the researchers drilled approximately 58 meters into the snow and ice of Antarctica in a place called Tottuki Point.

When the ice melted in the laboratory, the researchers found that dust particles are very small (10 to more than 60 micrometer) that initially they believed to be a meteorite dust. However, further analysis showed that the particles (known as Interplanetary dust particles chondritic porous) similar to the comet samples collected by the NASA spacecraft Stardust and the samples found in the atmosphere.

Back to 2010, a team of French studying the Antarctic snow and reported that they found what they believe to be the comet particles, but the new findings are the first discovered comet dust report on the surface of the earth. Prior to these findings, the scientists believe that small dust particles will not last through the atmosphere, especially the harsh conditions after they landed.

Scientists want to learn more about comets because the object is believed to be the oldest objects in space. Studying them will reveal more about the origins of our solar system, and whether perhaps they are brought life on our planet, as some have believed that life on Earth was brought by comets.
