Astronomy Science ~ For the first time, astronomers have observed the transit (passing) Super-Earth planet in front of its star similar to the Sun through ground-based telescopes. This observation is a development that could spur them to search for signs of life on an alien planet from afar.

"Our observations have shown that we can detect the transits of small planets around Sun-like parent star using ground-based telescopes," said lead author Ernst de Mooij from Queen's University Belfast in Northern Ireland.

An international research team that made this detection using the Nordic Optical Telescope on the island of La Palma, Spain. The host star, "55 Cancri" is located just 40 light-years away from earth and can be seen with the eyes and its exoplanet named "55 Cancri e" can be detected from ground-based observatories.

During the transit time, the planet crosses the star of "55 Cancri" and blocking a small portion of its star's light. This suggests that the planet has a diameter approximately twice the size of Earth or 16,000 miles. This discovery is important because space missions that will come as TESS and PLATO should find plenty of small planets around bright stars.

TESS is a NASA mission scheduled to be launched in 2017, and PLATO is ESA's mission to be launched in 2024. Both will be looking for transiting terrestrial planets around nearby bright star. "We are slowly paving the way towards the detection of trace bio on Earth-like planets around nearby stars," added co-author Mercedes Lopez-Morales of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.

The findings appear in the Astrophysical Journal Letters.
