Astronomy Science ~ claim that Russian scientists have discovered large asteroids that could threaten Earth in the near future ignored by NASA.

Recent Russian news reports has stated that researchers discovered asteroid measuring 1,312 feet (400 meters) that could threaten Earth. However, the calculation of NASA and the Minor Planet Center in Cambridge, Massachusetts, shows that the asteroid 2014 UR116 pose no danger to Earth at least 150 years into the future. "Several press reports recently have suggested that an asteroid named 2014 UR116, was found on October 27, 2014 at the observatory MASTER-II in Kislovodsk, Russia, threatening hit the Earth," said officials at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California. "Although the asteroid measures approximately 400 meters has an orbital period of three years around the sun and the earth periodically returned to the environment, this means not threatening, because its orbital path does not pass close enough to Earth's orbit."

The orbit of asteroid 2014 UR116
According to the NASA statement, UR116 asteroid was first spotted about six years ago. NASA scientists are now re-calculate the route this asteroid around the sun and found that this object does not pose a threat to Earth.

To track cosmic objects potentially hazardous (so-called near-Earth objects, or NEO) as they orbit the sun, NASA involves the help of amateur astronomers and space scientists professionals worldwide. Once astronomers find and report potentially dangerous NEO, scientists then charted the orbits of comets or asteroids around the sun to see if the object was cut orbit the Earth in a way that is potentially dangerous.

Researchers are still finding new Neos any time, but astronomers are already a lot and managed to track the asteroid's orbit. NASA officials estimate that they have found more than 90 percent of Neos in "Earth region" with a diameter of 0.6 miles (1 kilometer) or greater. Scientists are now focusing to find 90 percent of NEOs that have a size of 459 feet (140 m) or greater, according to NASA.
