The magnetic field can affect the evolution of the planet. "It works as a shield against the stellar wind particles, which erode the atmosphere, so it is important to know whether a planet's magnetic field is large or small," said  Kristina Kislyakova, a planetary scientist at the Austrian Academy of Sciences, in Graz.

To find out details about exoplanets magnetic, Kislyakova and colleagues studied HD 209458b, a planet orbiting a Sun-like star in the constellation Pegasus within 150 light years from Earth. The planet has a mass of only 70% of the mass of Jupiter, but almost 40 percent bigger than Jupiter.

HD 209458b is a "hot Jupiter," a gas giant planet orbiting very close to its parent star, much closer than Mercury is to the sun. This incredible roasting makes the atmosphere of HD 209458b fly like a comet's tail. Astronomers, the planet dubbed as "Osiris", the Egyptian god who killed his own evil Shet.

The researchers used the Hubble telescope to analyze the light spectrum of HD 209458b as it passed in front of its parent star. Surprisingly, the data indicate a hydrogen atom moving away very quickly from the exoplanet with oblique way.

To help explain the unusual way in which hydrogen is blowing from HD 209458b, scientists build a 3D model to explain all known interactions between the planet's atmosphere and the stellar wind, a stream of particles flowing from the star. The models suggest that the planet has a magnetic field strength of about 10 percent of Jupiter and its parent star wind blowing into the planet at a speed of about 895 000 mph (1.44 million km / h).

These findings support previous research showing that hot Jupiter has a magnetic field is relatively weak compared to their cousins ​​cooler, gas giant planets.

Because hot Jupiter orbiting very close to its parent star, they experience a strong gravitational pull that may slow the rate of rotation. This slow rotation generates a magnetic field which is weaker, because the planet's magnetic field is generated from the rotation of the planet, the planet rotates faster, the stronger the magnetic field.

The findings are published in detail in the journal Science.
