Astronomy Science ~ A team of scientists has discovered new 'active asteroid' called 62 412 asteroids in the main asteroid belt between Mars and the solar system Jupiter.

This active asteroid has a stable orbit between Mars and Jupiter as other asteroids. However, unlike other asteroids, they sometimes shaped like a comet, when they took out dust and gas from their surfaces to create the effects of sporadic tail.

Asteroid active is new phenomenon and asteroid 62412 is one of the 13 active asteroid in the main asteroid belt known.

Scott Sheppard of the Carnegie Institution and Chadwick Trujillo of the Gemini Observatory, discovered an unexpected tail on the asteroid 62412 (this asteroid known as ordinary asteroid more than a decade). This finding makes the asteroid 62412 reclassified into active asteroid.

Scientists do not know the reason why this asteroid loss its material and formed like a tail. Although there are several theories as to the impact of new or sublimation from solid to gas.

"About ten years ago, we can easily distinguish which comets and which are not, but that all changed when we realized that not all of these objects show activity over time," said Sheppard.

In the past, the asteroid is considered as an object which is largely unchanged, but having the ability to observe celestial objects increased, thus enabling scientists to find the tail and coma, which is a thin veil of atmosphere surrounding the comet's nucleus.

Sheppard will present his findings at a meeting of the American Astronomical Society's Division of Planetary Sciences.
