Astronomy Science ~ Rigel (pronunciation: / raɪʤəl /) (Ori β / β Orionis / Beta Orionis) is the brightest star in the Orion constellation and the sixth brightest star in the night sky, with a visual magnitude of 0:18. Despite having naming Bayer "beta", Rigel is almost always brighter than Alpha Orionis (Betelgeuse).

And the following 10 interesting facts about Rigel star

1. Rigel is about 800 light years from Earth and the brightest star in the constellation of Orion.

2. Rigel is actually a three-star system that consists of a blue supergiant Rigel A and two companions were smaller and dimmer.

3. Rigel has a mass 21 times greater than the mass of our sun. High mass stars like Rigel will burn their fuel at a rate much faster than smaller stars, as a result they only have a few million years before exploding as a supernova.

4. Rigel live only about 8 million years before the supply runs out of hydrogen in its core. Our sun 4.5 billion years old will continue to burn hydrogen in its core for 5 or 6 billion years from now.

5. Over the next few million years, Rigel will expand  the larger of the size as it becomes a red supergiant, and finally exploded into a supernova.

6. If Rigel explode as a supernova, it will be the brightest object in the night sky after the moon.

7. Rigel has a diameter of approximately 79 times larger than the diameter of the sun, if placed in the center of our solar system, Rigel will almost reach the orbit of the planet Mercury.

8. Rigel is estimated to have a surface temperature of about 12000 C (22,000 F), two times hotter than our sun.

9. Rigel is a blue supergiant star with a luminosity more than 120,000 times brighter than the sun.

10. Rigel name comes from the word Riǧl Ǧawza al-Yusra, is derived from Arabic meaning "left foot".
