Astronomy Science ~ Pieces of space debris originating from spy satellites which threatens the possibility of a lens cap rammed the International Space Station (ISS). This week, the ISS was forced on thrust out of the path of debris to prevent a potential collision. The impetus will be ATV-5 cargo planes and encourage ISS Europe about a mile (1.6km) higher.

Debris was within 0.7 miles of the ISS and the NASA mission control in Texas feel the debris too close. To move the ISS, they turn on the rocket boosters in ATV-5 (Automated Transfer Vehicle). This increases the speed of the ISS and lifted slightly to a higher orbit to avoid the debris.

Moving the ISS - known as Pre-determined Debris Avoidance manouevre (PDAM) - not a rare thing. There are hundreds of thousands of pieces of debris in orbit around Earth that poses a threat to the ISS. Most of this debris comes from China testing anti-satellite missiles in 2007, when it blew up one weather satellite in orbit.

This incident was widely criticized and has produced a number of hazardous debris orbiting the earth.
Another incident space when the famous American-owned satellite Iridium 33 collided accidentally with Russian Kosmos-2251 in 2009. These events also produce large amounts of debris into Earth orbit.

There are a number of organizations that track junk orbiting Earth. If a piece of space debris crashing ISS has a chance of 1: 100,000, NASA issued a 'yellow alert'. This means that the station must be moved, as happened recently, but the move could affect the mission. If the possibility of a collision are 1 in 10,000, then NASA issued a 'red alert', which means that the station must be removed regardless of whether it could impede the mission.

And in very rare circumstances, when a collision would have occurred, the crew must prepare an emergency evacuation. In March 2009 the case of such incidents, and the three astronauts on the ISS had to take shelter in one of the Soyuz module, which acts as a 'lifeboat'. Had station was hit, they were forced to escape and return to Earth.
