Astronomy Science ~ One of the main goals in search for exoplanets is life could arise elsewhere in the universe. In fact, the main purpose of the space telescope Kepler is to find Earth-like planets in the habitable zone.

But is there a system of the Solar System that has two Earth orbiting close to each other for billions of years? Is this possible? A new study shows that "yes, this can happen". Imagine if the doubles earth planet searches could come true.

With today's technology it is difficult to find an Earth-sized planet, can we find a doubles Earth?, but if the planet exists, will present an interesting question. Could they be inhabited? How are they formed? Further research is needed.

The study says that the double Earth could happen if they form at least half of the Sun-Earth distance, from its parent star. Scientists who study the presence of a double Earth stated that the Doubles Earth was born because of a scenario in which two rocky objects approaching one another in their early formation of its Solar System. They do not collide (as might form our Moon), but they're pretty close, maybe a few times the radius of them.

Scientists simulate the planet using a simulated meeting, dubbed the Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics which has been used in the past for such a scenario simulated collision that created the Moon. This scenario shows that the collision between two planets the size of Earth would only result in months. However, if the object comes close enough to generate a tidal distortion at each other, planets can form to be a binary system.

The research was presented at a meeting of the Division for Planetary Sciences meeting of the American Astronomical Society this week by Ryan Keegan, Miki Nakajima, and planetary science researcher David Stevenson, all of the California Institute of Technology.
