Astronomy Science ~ Exoplanet is a planet outside the Solar System. In March 2009, NASA launched the Kepler space telescope with the aim to find planets orbiting stars other than our sun, known as exoplanets, with the hope that maybe we can identify Earth-like planets that could support life.

In August, NASA's Kepler mission should end when the two damaged wheels. But before this damage, Kepler telescope collects large amounts of data and find thousands of potentials candidates.

And here are some unique facts about Exoplanet

1. The first exoplanet was discovered in 1992. The planet is named PSR B1257 + 12B and is 980 light years from Earth. This planet orbits the pulsar named PSR B1257 + 12 in the Virgo constellation.

2. According to the NASA Jet Propulsion Lab's database, there are currently 919 confirmed exoplanets orbiting other stars, with an additional 3,602 candidate planets waiting to be confirmed. (Several different data base mentioning that more 1000 exoplanets have been confirmed at this time).

3. Some planets orbiting two stars so they called a binary star system, like the planet Tatooine in the Star Wars movie. Some evidence suggests that the system is likely to be able to have Earth-like planet hospitable for life.

4. The first planet discovered orbiting a sun-like star was 51 Pegasi b, orbiting the 51 Pegasi star is 50 light years from Earth in the Pegasus constellation. This planet informally nicknamed Bellerophon. 51 Pegasi b is categorized as "Hot Jupiter".

5. Exoplanet PSR B1620-26 b or also known as Methuselah is a very old planet. This planet is believed to have formed 13 billion years ago, less than a billion years after the formation of the universe. (Earth 4.5 billion years old.) This planet PSR B1620-26 orbiting a star in the Scorpio AB constellation is 12,400 light years from Earth.

6. The smallest exoplanet is now known is Kepler-37b. Exoplanet has a size as our Moon. Because this planet is so close to the its Star, orbiting very fast. 1 year on planet Earth is only 13 days on Kepler-37b and its surface temperature is 425 ° C. Kepler-37b is 210 light years from Earth and orbiting Kepler-37 star in the Lyra constellation. More about Kepler-37b

7. Currently, the largest known planet is WASP-12b, which orbits the star WASP-12 in the Auriga constellation. The planet has a radius 1.83 times greater than the radius of Jupiter. The distance to the planet is 871 light years from Earth. (Actually, there's more exoplanets larger than WASP-12b, namely CT Chamaeleontis b, but the object is suspected as brown dwarfs).

8. The farthest Exoplanet currently found is OGLE-05-390L b, the planet is 21,500 light years from Earth in the scorpio constellation. This planet categorized as "Super Earth" which has a mass about five times the mass of Earth.

9. It is estimated that there are 160 billion planets in our Milky Way galaxy and recent studies have reported there are approximately 100 million planets capable of supporting life in our galaxy.

10. The universe is very wide. At least up to now there are 200 billion galaxies seen today. Each galaxy is estimated to have billions and even trillions of stars. Astronomers suspect there are about 1024 (1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000) planets in the universe. Even the number was only an estimate and will continue to grow and multiply.

And there are many more facts about exoplanets, will be discussed at another time again ....
