Astronomy Science ~ A new study reveals that intense winds of the black holes can inhibit the growth of the galaxy and prevent the formation of new stars.

By using Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (link is external) (NuSTAR), researchers can use X-ray spectrum of the black hole that is very luminous (quasar PDS 456) to detect the gas flow almost spherical highly ionized flows out of the galaxy.

This discovery allows astronomers for the first time be able to measure the strength of the wind ultra-fast black holes and show that they are large enough to affect the fate of the parent galaxy.

The evolution of galaxies is connected to the growth of supermassive black holes at their centers. During the quasar phase, large luminosity is released when matter falls into a black hole and a radiation boost wind can transfer a portion of this energy back to the parent galaxy.

Co-author Fiona Harrison of the California Institute of Technology said that they knew that the black hole at the galactic center could take the material and this process can result in the wind, which is thought to regulate the growth of galaxies. Knowing the velocity, shape and size of the wind, they can know how strong they are.

In the new study, astronomers established that the PDS 456, active black holes are very luminous or quasars, has winds that bring more energy every second of what is emitted by more than 1 trillion sun. Bill Craig of the University of California, Berkeley, says that by looking at the flow out of this great round, they can see a mechanism to explain the relationship between black holes and galaxy formation.

The new report shows that supermassive black holes and galaxies maintain connected by high-speed winds. Black Hole wind pushing large amounts of material to the outside through the galaxy, which ultimately stops the formation of new stars.

The results of this study were published in the Science journal.
