Astronomy Science ~ Moon is the largest object floating through space around the Earth, but that's not the only objects that float near the Earth. Actually, a lot of rocky objects that live in the inner solar system that occasionally pass through the Earth.

Duncan Forgan, a researcher at the University of St Andrews, recently wrote about an object called 3753 Cruithne (pronounced krooy-nyuh) in The Conversation, in which he calls "the second month." The object has a diameter of only 3 miles. Because of its small size, astronomers need a powerful tool to see Cruithne. Telescope at the Observatory Powell took the picture above, where it only appears as a small light spot.

NEOWISE Space Telescope took five pictures Cruithne are compiled into a single image below. NEOWISE monitor the skies for near-Earth objects such as asteroids and comets. Reason Cruithne appear red in this image is because it emits light at a lower energy than the white stars on background, said James Bauer, a scientist who studies the comet at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

This object is known as a quasi-orbital satellites for not following the path of the Moon's orbit like a neat oval. It orbits around the Earth in a way that is somewhat confusing, in small concentric circles until the end of the round.

Cruithne is the type of object called Aten asteroid, which is a group of asteroids that live in the inner solar system between Earth and the sun. Have a strange path through the space in which it orbits the sun and the earth in the horseshoe-shaped path.

Cruithne orbits the Sun in about a year, but it took 770 years to complete a horseshoe-shaped movement around the earth. Scientists believe that in the future, Cruinthe might collide with the Earth with devastating consequences and may even lead to extinction. However, you can breathe easy because the point where it is estimated closest to Earth occurred about 2,750 years.

Aten asteroids are relatively small, which is why the new investigators find them. Aten asteroid was first discovered in 1976, while Cruithne was found in 1986.
