Astronomy Science ~ A mystery is happening on Mars: amateur astronomers see large bursts erupting from the surface of the Red Planet that makes scientists puzzled.

With a height of more than 155 miles (250 kilometers) wide and hundreds of miles, this mysterious bursts seen by amateur astronomers in 2012. These bursts reflect sunlight, which means that they may be made of water ice, carbon dioxide ice or dust. But clouds are made of this material will be difficult to explain to the latest models of the Martian atmosphere, the scientists said.

Image of Mars from the past 20 years shows that short bursts, reaching an altitude of about 62 miles (100 km), occasionally visible from the surface of the planet. An image from Hubble in 1997 revealed abnormally high bursts, bursts similar to those seen in 2012, according to a statement from the European Space Agency (ESA).

Scientists at Universidad del Pais Vasco, Spain studied the images of these bursts and confirms that these bursts reach a height of more than 155 miles (250 km) above the surface, and covers an area of up to 310 by 620 miles (500 to 1,000 miles).

"At an altitude of 250 km, the area between the atmosphere and outer space is very thin, so that the bursts were reported very unexpected," said Agustín Sánchez-Lavega from the Universidad del País Vasco, lead author of the new study.

This feature evolved in less than 10 hours and remained visible for 10 days, but their structure changed from day to day, officials said ESA wrote in a statement. None of the spacecraft orbiting Mars are in a position to see the bursts at the time.

Analysis of images of bursts in 2012 and images of the past bursts erupting from the surface of Mars does not help researchers determine what causes these bursts or what they are made of.

"The idea of the possibility that this feature is caused by a cloud of reflect ice water, carbon dioxide ice or dust particles, but it will deviate from the standard atmospheric circulation models to explain the formation of clouds at a height like that," said Sánchez-Lavega in a statement.

"Another idea to say that they are associated with auroral emissions, and indeed previous aurora was observed in these locations, associated with known areas on the surface where there is a large anomaly in the magnetic field of the crust," said Antonio Garcia Munoz, from ESA ESTEC and coauthors research, said in a statement.

These findings were published on February 16 in the Nature journal.
