Astronomy Science ~ Astronomers have discovered a black hole biggest and brightest ever seen - an ancient monster with about 12 billion times the mass of the sun - this black hole appeared when the universe was younger than 1 billion years.

It remains a mystery how a black hole can grow so large in a relatively short time after the dawn of the universe, researchers said.

Supermassive black holes thought to lurk in the core of most large galaxies. The biggest black holes found so far in the universe has a mass close to more than 10 billion times the sun. For comparison, the black hole at the center of the Milky Way galaxy is estimated to have only 4-5 million times the mass of the sun.

Even light can not escape the gravitational pull of a black hole, and therefore they called the name of the black hole. But they sometimes look bright, it's because they are surrounded by a feature known as an accretion disk, which is composed of gas and dust are hot and emit light when swirled into a black hole.

Astronomers think that quasars, the brightest objects in the universe, has a supermassive black hole that release large amounts of light are remarkable because they are ripping stars apart into pieces.

So far, astronomers have discovered 40 quasars - each with a black hole of about 1 billion times the mass of the sun - which is formed when the universe was younger than 1 billion years.

Now, scientists reported the discovery of a supermassive black hole has a mass of 12 billion times the mass of the sun, is about 12.8 billion light years from Earth, it was formed when the universe was only about 875 million years.

This black hole - technically known as SDSS J010013.02 + 280,225.8 or short J0100 + 2802 - not only the greatest quasars ever seen in the early universe, but also the brightest. This object has a brightness of about 429 trillion times brighter than the sun and seven times brighter than the most distant quasars known at this time.

The light from distant quasars can take billions of years to reach Earth. Thus, astronomers can see quasars when the universe was young.

"It is quite surprising because it presents a serious challenge to the theory of the growth of black holes in the early universe," said study lead author Xue-Bing Wu, an astrophysicist at Peking University in Beijing.

Accretion discs limit the speed of modern black hole growth. First, the gas and dust in the disk approaches the black hole, congestion occurs, slowing down all the material falling into it. Second, when the material collide in this jam, heated, emit radiation that drives the gas and dust from the black hole.

Scientists still do not have a satisfactory theory to explain how supermassive objects formed in the early universe, says Wu.
The findings are published in the Journal of Nature.
