Astronomy Science ~ Physicist scientists Stephen Hawking warned against sending a message to the universe and show our existence because it can turn into a disaster when other intelligent beings to finding.

The idea that we may not be alone in this vast universe has made scientists look for different ways to communicate with the aliens and send them a signal from Earth. But Stephen Hawking warned them about it, and we do not know how to react aliens.

The aliens are out there and Earth had better care, at least according to Stephen Hawking. He suggested that extraterrestrials are almost certain to exist - but that instead of seeking them, humanity should be doing all they can to avoid contact.

The suggestions come in a new documentary series in which Hawking, one of the leading scientists worldwide, will present his latest thinking of some of the greatest mysteries of the universe.

Extraterrestrial life, which propose almost certainly exists in many other parts of the universe: not just in planets, but perhaps in the center of stars or even floating in interplanetary space.

Hawking logic on aliens is, for him, especially simple. The universe, he says, has 100 billion galaxies, each with hundreds of billions of stars. In this place, Earth is unlikely to be the only planet where life has evolved.

"To my mathematical brain, the numbers alone make thinking about aliens perfectly rational," he said. "The real challenge is to work out what aliens might actually be."

The answer, he suggests, is that most of it will be the equivalent of microbes or simple animals - the kind of life that dominated the Earth for most of its history.

A scene in his documentary for Discovery Channel shows herds of herbivores browsing on a bipedal aliens cliff where it was intercepted by flying, yellow lizard predators. Another shows glowing fluorescent aquatic animals forming vast shoals in the oceans that are thought to underlie the Europe of thick ice coating, one of the moons of Jupiter.

These scenes are speculative, but Hawking uses them to lead to a serious point, some life forms could be intelligent and threaten. Hawking believes that contact with one of these species could be devastating for humanity.

He suggests that aliens might simply raid Earth for its resources and then move on. "We have to look at ourselves to see how intelligent life might develop into something we do not want to answer I guess that might exist in massive ships, after having exhausted all the resources of their planet. Such advanced aliens perhaps become nomads, looking to conquer and colonize planets, as they can get ".

He concludes that trying to make contact with alien races is "a little too risky," he said. "If aliens visit us, I think the outcome would be much as when Columbus landed in America, which was not very well for the Native Americans."

The documentary marks a triumph for Hawking, 68, who is paralyzed by motor neurone disease and has very limited powers of communication. The project he and his producers three years, during which he insisted on rewriting large chunks of writing and checking the filming took.

John Smithson, executive producer for Discovery, said: "I wanted to make a program that was fun for the general public as well as scientists and that is a difficult task, given the complexity of the ideas in question."

Hawking suggested the possibility of extraterrestrial life before, but their views were clarified by a series of scientific advances, such as discovery, since 1995, more than 450 planets orbiting distant stars, showing that planets are common.

So far, all new planets found much larger than Earth, but only because the telescopes used to detect them are not sensitive enough to detect Earth-sized bodies at such distances.

Another breakthrough is the discovery that life on Earth has proven able to colonize its most extreme environments. If life can survive and evolve there, scientists reason, then perhaps nowhere off limits.

The belief in extraterrestrials Hawking puts on good science company. In his latest series Wonders of the Solar System BBC, Professor Brian Cox supported the idea, too, suggesting Mars, Europa and Titan, a moon of Saturn, as likely to find places.

Similarly, Lord Rees, the Astronomer Royal, said at a conference earlier this year that the aliens may be beyond human comprehension.

"I suspect that may be life and intelligence that is in ways we can not imagine," he said. "Just as a chimpanzee can not understand quantum theory, it could be there are aspects of reality that are beyond the capacity of our brains."

Hawking said that "If aliens visit us, the outcome would be worse than Columbus landed in America, which have not fared well for the Native Americans."

The idea of sending the message is the brainchild of the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) in California, involving powerful radio telescope that will send data to the stars and planets nearby.

Seth Shostak of the Seti, science adviser on the film 'Battleship' said that they plan to select the stars within 20 light years so that they are close enough to respond within a reasonable time.

However, US scientists and NASA consultant David Brin has warned that any contact with aliens would "change the destiny of man".
