Astronomy Science ~ A team of astronomers has identified two massive stars in the center of the planetary nebula will explode into a supernova about 700 million years from now.

By using the facilities of the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and the telescope in the Canary Islands, Miguel Santander-GarcĂ­a of Spain's National Astronomy Observatory and his colleagues found a pair of white dwarfs is currently conducting an investigation into how some stars produce nebulae are oddly shaped and asymmetric at the end of their lives .

Couple newfound white dwarf has a total mass equivalent to 1.8 times the mass of the sun, making the pair the most massive white dwarfs have been discovered. A white dwarf is a star that is very dense with a size comparable to the planet. They are basically the remnants of low-mass stars that slowly cool and fade.

The presence of the two stars have explained the strange shape of the nebula, dubbed Henize 2-428, one of the objects under study team and support the double star theory behind the odd shapes of some nebulae.

The researchers also found that individually, each pair orbit each other every four hours.

Both stars are also quite close to each other and are based on Einstein's theory of general relativity, they will be closer to each other, gravitational waves lose energy and will eventually merge into a single star at anytime within the next 700 million years.

A new star is born also be very massive that will surely crumble and eventually explode as a supernova.



"In short orbital period (4.2 hours) and the total mass (~ 1.8 M ⊙), the system will join the 700 million years, triggering a Type Ia supernova event (SN Ia)" the researchers wrote in their study, published in the journal Nature on February 9th.

"Until now, the formation of a Type Ia supernova with the merger of two white dwarfs purely theoretical," said study author David Jones, of the Instituto de AstrofĂ­sica de Canarias. "The pair star in Henize 2-428 make this happen!"

This object is about 4,566 light-years away in the constellation Aquila.
